All Saints Day – 2013

We celebrated All Saints day again this year and appeared in an article in the Perth Catholic Newspaper – The Record. They had found an article on our site from last year and wanted to cover a story to show that Catholics are still celebrating this great feast day.

Today is the feast day of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop

The 8th of August is the feast day of Australia’s first saint.

Prayer to St Mary

Ever generous God,
You inspired Saint Mary MacKillop
To live her life faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ
and constant in bringing hope and encouragement
to those who were disheartened, lonely or needy.
With confidence in your generous providence
and through the intercession of Saint Mary MacKillop
We ask that you grant our request……………….
We ask that our faith and hope be fired afresh by the Holy Spirit
so that we too, like Mary MacKillop, may live with courage, trust and openness.
Ever generous God hear our prayer.
We ask this through Jesus Christ.

2012 Catholic Home Educators Camp – North Coast NSW

North Coast Catholic Homeschool Camp

For many Catholic Home Educating families in Australia homeschool camps are an integral part of our lives. Lifelong friendships are formed, isolation is eased, support is given. This year our family will be attending (and hosting) the North Coast Catholic Homeschool camp for our 12th year! Excitement is building in our home, our children are asking, “what activities are we doing this year, who is coming? Will my friends from last year be there, will we have new friends?”

We warmly invite you to consider joining us for our 12th year!:) we still have a few cabins available. Held on the 10-14th September we are located at Lennox Head (Lismore Diocese), near the Gold Coast. Two hours south of Brisbane, nine hours north of Sydney.

At the core of our week is our shared Catholic Faith, our day begins with Mass, ends with the Rosary and Benediction and is woven throughout with Spiritual Talks and the opportunity for Confession. This year Fr John Rizzo (FSSP) will be our Camp Chaplain.

On the Tuesday Bishop Geoffrey Jarrett (Lismore diocese) celebrates Mass offering the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion.

It will be a wonderful week of making, renewing and building friendships. Impromptu games of soccer, dancing, fun and laughter into the night are our ‘stock in trade.’ Icebreaking games at the beginning and a time for parents to share ensures we all get to know one another.

Every day we enjoy swimming at one of the beautiful nearby beaches, we also enjoy a sand castle building contest, each year we hold a sports day, a concert and on the final night we have a grand finale with a bonfire.

Catholic Heritage Curricula – Summer Enrichment Program

+ June 23, 2012

Catholic Heritage Curricula invites you to try our Summer Enrichment Program! We offer materials that can be used for remedial reading, math, and spelling; or for wholesome summer activities and enrichment to keep skills up and children excited at the wonder of discovery over the long summer break from school.

Phonics, reading, spelling, and math workbooks may be used for catch-up tutoring in the child’s comforting, supportive home environment. (For remedial work, select materials that are suited to the ability of the child.)

As the student progresses through the work, point out to him the areas that he/she has mastered, praising him/her for his achievement. When the student’s weak areas begin to show, slow down a bit to make sure he/she understands the new concept. Then remind him that, just as he mastered previous concepts, he will soon master this one. Praise, praise, praise.

Students who are ahead of their grade level and thrive on challenges might use materials above their grade level, also suited to their abilities.

Or perhaps your family would like to create a summer of memories, exploring the wonders of God’s creation through simple astronomy; bird study; or teaching your children how to whittle; or to cook over an open fire. See Tin Cups and Tinder, The Young Man’s Handybook, or Pilgrims of the Holy Family. Would your daughter like to learn simple sewing and cooking skills with Mom or Grandma this summer? Create memories with Sewing with Saint Anne or Tea and Cake with the Saints.

Whether your child needs tutoring, or engaging enrichment activities, Catholic Heritage Curricula’s Summer Enrichment Program gives your family the tools to fill summer days with wholesome, character-building activities.

Praying God’s blessing and protection on your family this summer,

Theresa Johnson

Soul Surfer Movie

The Dove Foundation review.
Bethany (AnnaSophia Robb) was born to surf. A natural talent who took to the waves at a young age, she was leading an idyllic life on Kauai, participating in national surf competitions with her best friend Alana (Lorraine Nicholson), when everything changed. On Halloween morning, a 14-foot tiger shark came out of nowhere and seemed to shatter all her dreams.

Soul Surfer reveals Bethany’s fight to recover from her ordeal and how she grappled with the question of her future. Strengthened by the love of her parents, Tom (Dennis Quaid) and Cheri (Helen Hunt), and supported by her youth group leader Sara (Carrie Underwood), Bethany refuses to give in or give up, and begins a bold return to the water.

Bethany Hamilton was also home schooled “I homeschool. My mom is my teacher and I get a lot of my assignments online. A lot of my friends are homeschooled as well (such as Alana), so we end up having the same schedule of surfing, traveling, and then homework”

The real Bethany

Dove Worldview:
2011 Crystal Dove Seal Award Winner for Best Drama – Bethany Hamilton is one of the most amazing people we have come across in years; an avid surfer living in Hawaii who had her arm completely removed by a tiger shark when she was only 13 years old. This film, based on the true life story of Bethany’s experience, is one of few truly uplifting family films released by a major Hollywood studio in recent memory. The level of faith in God that Bethany and her family have is clearly portrayed in the film. Most of the story takes place on the water with incredible surfing scenes. (Real-life Bethany does all of the one-arm surfing in the film.)

This inspiring film is well-made and features a very convincing A-list cast; Helen Hunt, Dennis Quaid, Kevin Sorbo and Carrie Underwood. AnnaSophia Robb (Bridge to Terabithia) is spot on as Bethany. Dove is pleased to award this moving inspirational story our “Family-Approved” Seal for all ages. Caution to parents of young children: there is a very quick scene of a shark attack.

The Dove Foundation – Family Friendly Movie, DVD, Video and Game Reviews.

Frightening/Intense Scenes

You know the shark attack is coming. Little kids might not.

Again, the shark attack scene was very intense, with loud music, and chaotic film-work.

Also, the aftermath of the shark attack may be found grotesque for some time.

Bethany goes with her church group on a mission trip to Thailand, where they are dealing with a mass casualty. Many of the people there are hurt or crying, and have lost many family members. Bethany gets emotional in one scene as a result. Audiences might, too.
